Profile

Catherine studied Fine Art at the University of the West of England, graduating in 1997 when she received the Rebecca Smith Award for Printmaking. In 2001 she completed a Master's degree in multi-disciplinary Printmaking also at UWE, and received a Printmakers council award in her final year of study.

Catherine specialises in Intaglio printing, which involves printing an image from rolling a metal plate (with the image on it) and paper on top through a press with a bottom and top roller. The pressure of the rollers onto the paper and plate result in an image that is quite textural due to the embossed effects.

Within this type of printing there are various processes that result in an image.  Catherine uses three different methods, namely Etching, Dry Point and Carborundum which can be seen regularly throughout her work.

Artist’s Statement

The inspiration for my work comes from the textural qualities of landscape, particularly the rugged Cornish coastline and the effect that the sea has on the landscape.

The transparency and depth, which can be seen when looking down from the rocks into the sea, is often used as a starting point for developing my images.

I have a strong interest in composition and I use photography as a means for capturing striking compositions from the landscapes and seascapes that I visit. The photographs also hold memories of the colours experienced on the day. This visual material, alongside colour sketches, are then abstracted from and combined with the various qualities of different Intaglio print techniques, resulting in the prints exhibited.
